VGUMC Update

May 2026

At an after-worship meeting with our clergy, on April 19, a vote was taken whether or not to merge with another church in the Eastern
Orange County Parish. The alternative would be to close VGUMC. The majority voted to merge. Visits with Hope and Gardnertown are on the calendar for May 10 and May 17, respectively.

There is so much to be taken into consideration. VGUMC actually owns three pieces of property, one of which is our cemetery. When we merge, these properties will go to the accepting church (Hope or Gardnertown). All our financial assets will also go to the accepting church.

Just because VGUMC will be merging with a particular church, we all know that not every member of VGUMC will necessarily be attending that church. However, if we choose to join the accepting church, our memberships will need be transferred to said church. If others choose to join another church in the parish, the same holds true.

As of July 1, there will no longer be worship services at Vail’s Gate UMC. Our congregation is having to deal with, and accept, this reality. In the months ahead, we would be grateful for you support and your prayers, as we come to grips with this major shift in our faith journey. God has a plan for us, and we need to be open to follow God, wherever God leads.

Please keep the Vail’s Gate United Methodist Church in your prayers, and the entire parish, as we trust in our Lord to lead us onward.
